On November 26/27, 1778, a British expeditionary force weighed anchor off Sandy Hook, New Jersey and sailed southward for the purpose of recovering the Province of Georgia for the British crown. The war in the northern colonies had settled into a stalemate as the result of the disaster which had befallen royal arms at Saratoga. The details of the expedition’s origin, progress, successes and partial failures are recounted faithfully and in depth in the pages which ensue. Lt. Col. Campbell’s journal of the expedition, which includes the voyage from New York, his lightning-swift capture of Savannah and his two week occupation of Augusta is presented in print by the Richmond County Historical Society.
