For more than 70 years, the Augusta Historical Society (AHS) has collected, preserved and told Augusta’s story.

WE COLLECT IT through such projects as the Veterans History Project, in which we have completed video interviews with over 800 local veterans of World War II, and are interviewing veterans of Korea and Vietnam. These interviews are available locally at the Reese Library of Augusta University and nationally at the Library of Congress.

WE PRESERVE IT through Special Collections in the Reese Library at Augusta University, which maintains 4,900 book titles and over 400 manuscripts as well as historical photographs, vertical files and other historical materials.

WE TELL IT through Augusta Richmond County History, the journal we publish twice a year; through the books on local history that we have published, through our stewardship of Heroes Overlook at Riverwalk and 10th Street; through participation in such projects as the Civil War Symposium and the World War I Symposium, and through public presentations and lectures on local history.

BECOMING A MEMBER

Becoming a member of AHS will entitle you to a free subscription to our journal, Augusta Richmond County History. You will also receive invitations to our meetings on local history – at least three a year – and the reception that follow. Local historians such as Erick Montgomery, Leonard Todd, Bob Hester, and Tom Robertson have made presentations on the Augusta Fire of 1916, the slave-potter Dave and other interesting topics.

WE PUBLISH IT: Fourteen of the books we have published may be purchased here. Among them are books about the Revolutionary War in Augusta, the Academy of Richmond County, aviation in Augusta, the Augusta National Golf Course, and Augusta during the Civil War, and many other topics.
